SYSTA BB (KATE WELSMAN)

 

Systa BB’s inauguration into the world of DJing took place with the groundbreaking Global Village in 1993, transpiring to major festival appearances at Earthcore, Tranceplant, Bellingan Global Carnival, WOMADelaide, The Big Day Out, and Borneo Jazz Festival. She has been at the forefront of global and electronic music since she first began broadcasting on PBS radio in 1992. Since December 2009 she has produced and presented ‘The Good, The Dub & The Global‘ on Australia’s largest community radio station, RRR.

For almost 20 years she has been writing, broadcasting, DJing and dancing the rhythms that bind us. Systa BB has traversed the music realms, from broadcasting to supporting major international acts such as Tony Allen, Natacha Atlas and headlining Karavan! Melbourne International Gypsy Music Festival 2010 &2011. She has curated film and music festivals at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, was Director for Drum Festival 2011 and a consultant and MC for WOMADelaide and the Australian World Music Expo (AWME).

Systa BB has been keeping her ear to the ground, both overseas and within Australia, to hear and promote the sounds that unique communities are producing. Her latest adventures include contributing to the ‘2010 World Music: Global Sounds in Australia‘ UNSW Press, showcasing ‘Gypsy Rhythms’ at AWME 2010, conducting ‘Artist in Conversation’ series at WOMADelaide and a DJ tour of Paris and Berlin. Currently a feature writer for Rhythms Magazine and freelance reviewer for The Age.
